This presentation introduces therapists and licensed mental health professionals to EMDR, an evidence-based trauma treatment. It will cover the impacts of trauma, the Adaptive Information Processing model, and EMDR's eight phases and three-prong approach (as designed by Francine Shapiro). Information about training and certification will be reviewed.

  • Describe the theoretical orientations of EMDR: Adaptive Information Processing Model and how it applies to memory reprocessing.

  • Analyze clinical applications of EMDR for traumatic stress, recent traumatic events, and emerging use in group settings.

  • List criteria for optimal candidates for referral to Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy

  • Understand the trajectory leading to training in EMDR, and name certifying organizations for reputable training.
